The painful poignancy of desire

Today

You try to recall
Traces of your past
Idealized moments
Hazy, effervescent, soft
They fall light as dew
Upon your tired eyes
The tears I see in you
Glitter inside my heart
They give a glow to life
To youth, to days forever gone
To time itself, to our helplessness
Before its rapid fugue
An innocent kiss
The sense of wonder
The fluttering of your mind
They seem but distant visions
And figments lost in time
Yet as I dry your tears
By wiping my own eyes
I face our nostalgic mirror
With reflections about today
For I perceive so clearly
In your mesmerizing gaze
In the beauty of our present
Tomorrow’s yesterday.
